“What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong– you want only what will give you pleasure.” — James 4:1-3
The first thing that comes to mind when I read this passage was the movie Mean Girls. In the movie a new girl comes to town and gets into a group of girls that are pure trouble. They constantly tear each other down and talk behind each others’ backs. Vicious. Bitter. Rude. War. In the end their destructive attitudes and desires for things that aren’t theirs nearly ruin them.
Are you constantly fighting with your parents and friends? Are you lusting and desiring things that aren’t yours? Are you filled with jealousy? Do you desire things only for your own pleasure?
What is the cause of your ruin?
It is time for a heart check. What are your motives?
The passage ends with saying, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor.” — James 4:10
