Utensil Jar Facelift

We got our utensil jar for our wedding (4 years ago). There was nothing super special about it and as time has gone on, my style has become a little more playful. The shiny black, with silver rim, just kind of clashed with the rest of my kitchen decor.

Lucky me, a friend had given me a can of chalkboard spray paint. I just could not decide what to use it on (for like ever)! Then last week it hit me. The utensil jar. Even though it was already black, I new making it a chalkboard finish would yield itself to much more creativity and playfulness.

The process was quick and simple. I cleaned the jar, used a piece of sandpaper to rough it up. Then I washed and dried it again. After that I sat it on a piece of cardboard and gave it 3 coats. The process took about 20 minutes and then I let it dry for about 24 hours.

Before I began writing on it I made sure to rub chalk all over on it, then wipe it off, before using it (thanks Ida!). After that I played around a bit with doodles. I love the result!

before & after

What is on your list of things to use chalkboard paint on?
